Paul demonstrated his technique of crouching low over the unusually shaped handle-bars on his bike to reduce wind-resistance, and pointed out the aerodynamic shape of his helmet - he found there was no shortage of volunteers willing to try on a world-class athlete's working clothes!
Paul explained that he had been a competitor in various sports since his Primary School days in Murwillumbah, but he had concentrated solely on Triathlon from the age of fifteen. Rigorous training...

 Paul Matthews held everyone's attention as
 he told of a typical weekly training effort - kilometre after
 grinding kilometre of swimming, cycling and running.
 A "short" triathlon event is 1500m swim, 40 km bike  ride, and 10 km run!
 Longer triathlon events are 1.9 km swim, 90 km ride and  to finish, a 20 km run... that's from Tumbulgum to  Tweed Heads...and back!

Ministers - 2008 - Making a Difference

In March, 2008, an Assembly was held to present student-elected Tumbulgum Public School Government Ministers with their badges and other Instruments of Office. As you can see, from the photograph at right, this was a major School Assembly requiring whole school attendance.
Mrs Tolhurst welcomed to the school the Guest of Honour, Mr Paul Matthews, Past World Champion Junior Triathelete, and a current professional Triathlon competitor.
